Doorway Pages
Doorway pages are web pages created to rank for a specific keyword or location query, designed to funnel visitors toward a different destination rather than serve them at the point of arrival. They add no genuine value to the user who lands there, and they represent the opposite of what search engine optimization should accomplish: earning visibility through pages that genuinely help people. Google classifies doorway pages as search spam in its Search Essentials documentation (Google Search Central, 2022).
The terms bridge pages and gateway pages describe the same tactic.
Doorway Pages vs. Location Pages and Programmatic SEO
The distinction between a doorway page and a legitimate page does not depend on whether templates are used or how many pages a site publishes. It depends on what each page actually offers the visitor.
A genuine location page, written for a city where a business operates, contains information specific to that location: a real local address, actual contact details for that office, and content that serves a visitor in that city differently from a visitor elsewhere. That page has a clear reason to exist because its content cannot be published unchanged for another city.
A doorway page looks structurally similar but swaps only the keyword or city name. The body text is functionally identical across dozens of pages; only the placeholder changes. This also separates doorway pages from programmatic SEO. A programmatic approach uses templates to generate pages at scale, but each well-built programmatic page carries genuinely distinct data: real local inventory, verified reviews, specific details that differ entry by entry. The template is the structure; that data is what gives each page its own value. Understanding what qualifies as unique content makes the line between those two approaches clearer in practice.
Doorway pages are also distinct from duplicate content. Duplicate content typically arises without deliberate intent, through URL parameter variations or text syndicated across multiple locations. Doorway pages are constructed as a deliberate ranking tactic, which is why Google's spam policies treat them as a higher-severity violation (Google Search Central, 2022).
Example (illustrative scenario, not based on a real company): A national window installation company creates 80 city pages targeting "window installation [city]" queries. Each page contains the same body text, substituting only the city name. There is no local office address, no city-specific project information, no distinct contact details per location. The content is functionally identical across all 80 pages. This matches the pattern Google's doorway page self-assessment criteria are designed to identify (Google Search Central Blog, 2015).

Why Doorway Pages Affect Search Rankings
Google can respond to doorway pages in two ways. A manual reviewer may issue a site-level or page-level manual action, requiring the offending pages to be removed and a reconsideration request to be submitted before rankings recover. Algorithmic systems may also identify and suppress sites following this pattern without any manual review step. Google published a dedicated quality update targeting doorway pages in 2015 (Google Search Central Blog, 2015). A site structured around doorway pages also undermines its own on-page SEO: each page should serve a distinct visitor intent, and near-identical pages with swapped placeholders do not meet that standard.
Beyond ranking risk, doorway pages consume crawl budget. When search engine crawlers spend time on near-identical pages that add no distinct value, they have less capacity to reach and index the pages that actually matter to your business.
The practical alternative is one well-researched location page per city where the business genuinely operates, with content that could not be published unchanged for any other city. The guide on local SEO for attracting local customers covers what makes a location page credible to both visitors and search engines.

Related Terms
The terms most closely related to doorway pages are duplicate content and unique content, both covered in this glossary and linked above. A related manipulation tactic is cloaking, which presents different content to search engines than to human visitors, a further step in the same direction away from honest indexing.
