TOFU, MOFU, BOFU: The Three Stages of the Marketing Funnel
TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU stand for Top of Funnel, Middle of Funnel, and Bottom of Funnel. The three terms classify the phases of a marketing and sales funnel by buyer intent, and they define which content type belongs at each stage.
What each stage covers
TOFU addresses buyers who have recognized a problem but are not yet evaluating specific options. The goal at this stage is visibility and education. Typical formats include blog posts, explainer articles, organic search content, and social media posts that answer broad "what is" and "how does" questions. The primary output is traffic and brand familiarity, not yet sales-ready qualified leads.
MOFU targets buyers who are actively comparing approaches. They understand their problem; they are now evaluating different ways to address it. Useful content here includes comparison guides, webinars, white papers, product overviews, and industry reports. The goal at this stage is not conversion but qualification: giving a prospect enough information to move from broadly interested to committed to a direction.
BOFU content speaks to buyers who are ready to decide between specific vendors. Product demos, pricing pages, free trials, customer testimonials, and direct sales conversations all serve this stage. BOFU content removes remaining objections and gives the buyer a concrete reason to act now. For B2B teams, converting prospects into customers consistently requires content that supports this final decision stage.

What TOFU/MOFU/BOFU is not
The framework is a content planning tool, not a model of how buyers actually behave. That distinction matters in practice.
The customer journey describes the full path a buyer takes from first awareness through to post-purchase experience, including all their touchpoints, the loops back through earlier stages, and the emotional dimensions of deciding. TOFU/MOFU/BOFU describes the content a marketing team deploys in response to those phases. A buyer can revisit TOFU-style research several times while already in a MOFU comparison phase; the funnel model does not capture that non-linearity.
The terms are also distinct from the sales pipeline, which tracks deal stages (qualified, proposal, negotiation, close) from the seller's perspective. A prospect in an active pipeline stage may still need MOFU content to complete their evaluation. Treating funnel stage and pipeline stage as the same thing leads to premature sales outreach directed at buyers who are still researching.
Example (illustrative, no real figures): A B2B software company publishes weekly how-to articles and ranks well on informational search terms. Inbound traffic is strong, but most inquiries come from buyers who are "just researching." The team adds a comparison guide and a recorded product walkthrough (MOFU), then a pricing FAQ and a free 14-day trial (BOFU). Over the following months, the share of qualified inquiries from inbound visitors increases. No channel investment changed; only the content mix across funnel stages did.
Why the distinction matters for B2B teams
Most B2B marketing teams produce a high volume of TOFU content because it is straightforward to measure: page views, search rankings, and traffic are visible in any analytics dashboard. MOFU and BOFU content is harder to attribute directly to revenue, but it is where purchase decisions typically form.
A content plan that covers only TOFU will attract visitors who have nowhere to go next. They land on an educational article, find no comparison resources or decision support, and look elsewhere. Often, that means a competitor's MOFU content captures them instead.
Understanding which stage a piece of content serves also shapes channel choices. TOFU work typically runs through organic search and social media; MOFU through email nurturing, retargeting, and gated downloads; BOFU through direct sales conversations, paid search, and review platforms. Assigning each content type to its phase helps evaluate it with the right metric: traffic for TOFU, engagement and qualification rate for MOFU, conversion for BOFU.
