Search Terms Report
The Search Terms Report in Google Ads shows the exact queries that users typed into Google before clicking your ad. It is the direct record of actual user intent, distinct from the keywords you configured in your campaign.
Keyword vs. Search Term: Where the Line Runs
A keyword is the bid you place in Google Ads, for example "accounting software." A search term is the literal query a user entered into the search bar, for example "cloud accounting software for small teams." Even with exact match, Google may serve ads for close variants, so keyword and search term are not always identical. With broad match or phrase match, a single keyword can trigger a wide range of search terms, some closely aligned with your offering, others only loosely connected.
The Keyword Report aggregates performance at the level of the keywords you chose; it does not reveal the individual queries behind those results. The Search Terms Report sits one layer deeper, showing the raw queries that generated clicks and impressions. Both reports belong to the same campaign, but they answer different questions. The Keyword Report reveals how your bids perform. The Search Terms Report reveals what users were actually looking for when those bids fired.
Example: A campaign bidding on "project management software" under broad match might surface terms like "project management tool for remote teams" (a strong buying signal, worth adding as a dedicated keyword) alongside "what is project management software" (an informational query from a user not yet in the market). Identifying the second group as a candidate for the negative keyword list is only possible by reading the Search Terms Report directly. Once identified, add the term as a negative keyword — choose the appropriate match type (exact or phrase) and apply it at campaign or ad group level, depending on how narrowly you need to restrict the exclusion.

Why It Counts
The Search Terms Report is one of the most direct ways to see where your budget actually goes in Search campaigns. Without it, broad and phrase match keywords operate as a black box: spend flows against queries you cannot see, assess, or act on. Regular review converts that hidden traffic into deliberate decisions, whether to add a term as a dedicated keyword, block it as a negative, or leave it within the existing structure.
Demand discovery is a secondary but equally valuable application. Users phrase searches in ways that often differ from the terms advertisers initially choose. High-intent queries that surface in the report but are not yet in the keyword list are candidates for promotion to dedicated keywords with their own bids and ad copy. This kind of iterative refinement is central to well-managed search engine advertising.
One practical constraint: Google does not disclose every search term that triggered your ads. Queries falling below certain privacy thresholds appear grouped under "Other" in the report, aggregating traffic you cannot break down further. The report is always a partial view of total query activity, not a complete inventory.

Limitations in Performance Max
In Performance Max campaigns, the Search Terms Report is available but provides less granular coverage than in standard Search campaigns. Rather than surfacing individual query strings, PMax tends to group traffic into broader thematic categories, and a larger share of spend appears under "Other." This limits query-level negative keyword management, which is one of the main uses of the report in standard Search campaigns. Advertisers running Performance Max alongside Search campaigns should treat PMax search term data as a directional signal, not a complete audit of what is triggering their ads.

A practical next step: export the Search Terms Report, sort by cost, and review the top 20 terms for potential negatives or keyword additions. For broader context on how cost and quality interact, the Quality Score guide covers the variables that shape budget efficiency.
