Ad Scheduling (Dayparting)
Ad scheduling in Google Ads lets you define which days of the week and which hours of the day your ads are eligible to appear. Instead of running campaigns around the clock, you set specific time windows, and your ads show only within those windows. Google Ads calls the feature the ad schedule; the broader practice of time-based ad delivery goes by the name dayparting.
Ad Scheduling, Dayparting, and Bid Adjustments
The terms "ad scheduling" and "dayparting" are often used as synonyms, but they originate in different contexts. Dayparting is a concept borrowed from broadcast advertising, where broadcasters divided the day into named audience segments (morning, daytime, prime time) and sold airtime at different rates for each. Google Ads applies the same logic to paid search. The feature inside the platform is officially the ad schedule; dayparting describes the practice that feature enables.
A third term causes the most confusion: time-based bid adjustments. These are not the same as ad scheduling. Ad scheduling determines whether your ads are eligible to appear in a given window at all. Bid adjustments for time slots tell Google to bid higher or lower within an eligible window; they modify the base bid rather than act as an on/off switch. You can use both together: schedule ads for Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, and then apply a higher bid adjustment for the specific hours that convert best in your campaign data.

Application Example
Example scenario, not real customer data: A heating engineer runs Google search ads to generate inbound phone calls. The campaign currently runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By restricting the ad schedule to Monday through Friday, 7 am to 7 pm, the budget concentrates entirely in the hours when someone is available to answer a call. Hours outside that window produce clicks that cost money but cannot convert into a live call; removing them reallocates the same total budget toward windows that can actually close.
Why Ad Scheduling Matters for Phone-Lead Businesses
For local service providers and B2B companies that depend on inbound phone calls, ad scheduling addresses a specific problem: click costs accumulate during hours when no one is available to respond. Restricting delivery to business hours keeps spend aligned with your actual capacity to convert a lead. The connection to your Google Ads daily budget is direct: a fixed daily budget spread across 24 hours is effectively diluted, while the same budget concentrated into business-hour windows buys more impression volume where conversion is possible.
The same logic applies wherever demand follows a predictable daily pattern. A commercial cleaning company targeting office managers, for instance, may find that decision-makers search for vendors during working hours rather than evenings. Restricting the schedule keeps targeting tighter without requiring a different keyword strategy. Ad Scheduling and Smart Bidding
When you use manual CPC bidding, time-based bid adjustments in your ad schedule work exactly as configured. With Smart Bidding strategies (Target CPA, Target ROAS, or Maximize Conversions), Google's algorithm already factors time-of-day signals into each auction bid automatically, drawing on your account's own conversion history. Manual bid adjustment values you enter for specific schedule slots are largely overridden by the Smart Bidding model in those cases.
The practical exception is a complete exclusion. Even under Smart Bidding, removing a time window from your ad schedule entirely prevents ads from running in that window. For businesses that rely on phone calls, the right approach under Smart Bidding is not to add manual bid adjustments by hour; it is to remove the hours when no one is available to answer. That is the one scheduling decision Smart Bidding cannot make for you.
